Nathan’s Journey to Another Chance

When Nathan first came to Another Chance House, he wasn’t quite ready to rebuild his life. Like many struggling with addiction, he carried a heavy burden of shame and left the program in the middle of the night, unable to face those trying to help him. Falling back into using and selling drugs, a possession charge became the wake-up call he needed. Nathan realized he didn’t need just any chance—he needed another chance to start fresh, and that’s exactly what we offer at Another Chance House.

Veterans Court gave him the opportunity to return, and today, Nathan is making the most of it. For the past three months, he’s been living in our supportive community, working through intensive therapy, anger management, and our encouraging environment to rebuild his future. In November, he’ll graduate from the VA’s Intensive Outpatient Program and is approaching a significant milestone: 90 days of sobriety. His goal is to become a Peer Support Specialist, helping others overcome the same battles he knows so well. For the first time in years, Nathan is hopeful about the future and ready to build a life free from addiction.

Nathan’s story began long before he came to us. As a young boy, he endured years of physical abuse and instability, moving between his mother and father in different states. By high school, he was fighting, using drugs, and trying to manage his pain with substances. After learning he was going to be a father, Nathan enlisted in the Army to give his family a better start. But an injury prematurely ended his military career, shattering his plans. Returning to old patterns, he spiraled deeper into addiction, caught in a cycle of using, selling, and hiding his struggles.

Today, Nathan is breaking that cycle. At Another Chance House, he’s found more than a place to stay; he’s found a community committed to lifting men up. He’s discovered new passions—from going to the gym to practicing still-life drawing to enjoying a round of golf without a drink in hand. Nathan is developing a new perspective on life. His advice to others beginning their journeys? “Let go of the people, places, and things that keep you stuck. Let go of the anger, the shame, the fear—just let it go.” And he’s doing just that, living each day with hope and determination to make his future a reality.

Your support gives men like Nathan another chance. With every donation, you’re helping men reconnect with family, achieve sobriety, and find a path to true self-sufficiency.

For Nathan, Another Chance House isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a family. He feels supported by everyone, from our executive director to his fellow veterans. He’s moving closer to living in our Victory duplex—a proud milestone in his journey—and for the first time, he’s allowing himself to dream about a future: staying sober, going back to school, and even traveling the world.

Give today to offer the hand up that changes lives—because as long as a man is still breathing, he deserves another chance.
